In Saskatchewan, a network of trained personnel respond to emergencies in advance of the responding ambulance crew. These personnel are called first responders.
First Responders are local volunteers in your rural community that have completed training at the basic life support level and are trained in the assessment and stabilization of a patient until the ambulance arrives. They respond as part of the EMS team in rural areas where ambulance response time is increased due to distance. The vast expanse of Saskatchewan means that in certain situations it may take the ambulance 30 minutes or more to arrive by ground.
The former Prairie North Health Region has many first responder groups. Those administered by WestMed Paramedics include: Turtleford, Turtle Lake, Brightsand Lake, Paradise Hill, Loon Lake, Makwa Sahgaiehcan First Nation, and Ministikwin First Nation . New members to these groups are always welcome.
